Rules of the Art Prize

The Icelandic Art Prize jury is appointed by The Visual Arts Council, Iceland University of the Arts, the Association of Art History and Theory in Iceland, art museum directors, and The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists.

Art. 1

The Icelandic Art Prize jury is appointed by The Visual Arts Council, Iceland University of the Arts, the Association of Art History and Theory in Iceland, art museum directors, and The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists.

Art. 2

Directors of the institutions appointing the jury appoint two candidates each for the committee. They should endeavour to nominate candidates possessing extensive knowledge of Icelandic visual arts. The Icelandic Art Center manages The Icelandic Art Prize on behalf of The Visual Arts Committee and assembles a jury from the organizing associations’ submitted nominations. When a jury is appointed, the Administrative Procedures Act’s (37. 1993) conditions of qualification shall be considered.

Art. 3

A jury is appointed at the start of the year and serves for one year. The names of people on the jury must be kept secret and should not be made public until the award ceremony. Members of the committee must maintain total confidentiality regarding their and others' roles serving on the committee. Everything said and transpired during the jury meetings is confidential, including after their work has been carried out.

Art. 4

The jury should comprise individuals of diverse genders, and equality should be considered when appointing candidates.

Art. 5

The chairperson of the jury is the chairperson of The Icelandic Visual Arts Council.

Art. 6

Jury members are expected to visit the majority of the year’s exhibitions and consider them with their role in mind.

Art. 7

There are prizes in two categories: The Art Prize and The Motivational Award.

There are also awards for Group Show of the Year, Retrospective of the Year, and Publication of the Year.

Each committee member also submits two or more nominations in each category. During the process, the committee considers submissions from the public for The Icelandic Art Prize. The jury delivers a list of nominees wherein four artists are nominated for the Art Prize and three for The Motivational Award.

Pre-selections and testimonials should be available no later than three weeks before the award ceremony. Names of award recipients in each category should be accessible concurrently.

Art. 8

Should a dispute arise in selecting artists for the Art Prize and The Motivational Award, the committee should have a vote, and the majority should determine the choice of recipient.
