Around the Ringroad This Summer

Are you going on a road-trip this summer around Iceland? We have selected a few highlights.

For a full listing you can use our new events calendar.

Outvert Art Space in Ísafjörður hosts an ambitious exhibition series titled Ferocious Glitter II, curated by Gavin Morrison. Over a period of ten weeks Outvert will host five exhibitions by Einar Þorsteinn, Eyborg Guðmundsdóttir, Hreinn Friðfinnsson / Sólon Guðmundsson, Gabríela Friðriksdóttir and Donald Judd.

Akureyri Art Museum just opened five new exhibitions for the summer in its recently renovated building. There you can view works by Brynja Baldursdóttir, Jóna Hlíf Halldórsdóttir, Snorri Ásmundsson and Heimir Björgúlfsson amongst others. And only a few minute’s drive out of Akureyri, Safnasafnið is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary with a selection of new exhibitions well worth visiting. If you are headed north se also recommend a visit to Verksmiðjan at Hjalteyri where two group exhibitions will be running this summer.

For those headed to the east Skaftfell Center for Visual Art’s summer exhibition will be with the Reykjavik based artist Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir. For this project she has chosen to show–alongside her own drawings, digital prints and small scale sculptures–the work of Benedikt Guðmundsson (1907-1960), whose modernist paintings and ceramics she grew up around.

For those going on a day trip out of Reykjavik the exhibition Zeitgeist at LÁ Art Museum will be running all summer. The exhibition comprises a diverse range of works from the collection of physician and collector Skúli Gunnlaugsson. The common factor of the pieces is that all were made in the last decade. The artists represented in the exhibition are of the younger generation of artists, who have made their mark on the Icelandic art scene in recent years.
