Anything Possible
Sigurður Atli Sigurðsson
Sigurður Atli’s works, such as Freedom and Seating Arrangement, present familiar visual systems and invite viewers to decide for themselves what they stand for. Sigurður’s works have been compared to concrete poetry: "In this sense his work relates to concrete poetry, in the dialogue between dimensions, how such little information on a page can represent a space, a body or an object." (Joe Keys, Sena, exhibition catalog, 2024) His works share a common feature of being clean and simple in form, engaging with what might be called the basic fundamental elements of printmaking: layering and repetition, although they are created using other media. The works in the exhibition are made with a combination of UV inkjet printing, screen printing, oil painting and oil pastels. They blur the line between printmaking and painting, between reality and imagination.
Sigurður Atli Sigurðsson (b. 1988) is known for works that explore the patterns shaping human interactions. He often works with large series of artworks and installations that take over the exhibition space. Throughout his career, Sigurður Atli has worked with various techniques in printmaking. In 2015, he co-founded Print & Friends with Leifur Ýmir, and together they have collaborated with numerous artists on editioned work and artist books. Around the same time, Sigurður Atli began teaching at the Iceland University of the Arts, overseeing the school’s printmaking workshop for several years. His expertise in this field has led him to exhibit and curate shows worldwide, most recently at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Akureyri Art Museum, and the National Gallery of Iceland.
