I’d Rather be Somewhere Nice

Auðunn Kvaran

Auðunn Kvaran's current work delves into the inherent fluidity of our environment, exploring how forces like water and time shape both physical objects and our perception of place. He investigates the continuous process of transformation, where boundaries between the natural and artificial blur, and where the familiar is constantly being reshaped. Kvaran invites us to consider the unseen currents that influence our surroundings, prompting reflection on the dynamic relationship between ourselves and the world we inhabit. By focusing on the subtle yet persistent forces that sculpt our reality, he encourages a deeper awareness of the ever-evolving landscapes we navigate.

Our environment is inherently fluid. Forces like water and time shape both physical objects and how we engage with the world. They invite a continuous process of transformation, where boundaries between the natural and artificial blur and the familiar is constantly being reshaped. If we consider the unseen currents that influence our surroundings, a reflection on the dynamic relationship between ourselves and the world we inhabit is prompted.

Historically, sea currents have been a determining factor in where people have settled

The people, once settled, have influenced and changed the sea currents, so now certain islands see a larger number of climate and political refugees arriving by sea

The Suez canal has radically changed shipping routes in the area, making travel by sea faster and safer than ever before, but introduced alien species to the sea

The large ships that cross the canal bring alien species across continents through ballast water and biofouling

As the ecosystems change, so do the eddies and currents

New pathways are formed, new means of transportation is established, and the cycle repeats itself
